32 Justice Questions
Joyce Baptist and Elizabeth B. Pearce
As you read this chapter, consider the following questions:
- How do you personally define justice? When you think about families in the United States, how does this definition apply—or fall short? What does justice look like in everyday family life?
- Reflect on how race, ethnicity, gender, immigration status, and socioeconomic background intersect in your life or the lives of those around you. How have these identities shaped experiences of justice or injustice within your family or community?
- Consider the founding documents of the United States—such as the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. What messages do they send about justice, and how inclusive do you feel those messages are today?
- Think about a time when your family experienced justice or fairness. What made that moment meaningful? Now think about a time when your family faced injustice—what were the circumstances, and how did it affect your sense of belonging or trust in institutions?
- If you were adding a topic to a chapter on justice and families, what would it be? What stories, perspectives, or issues do you feel are missing from mainstream conversations about justice in America?
