In today’s digital world, what most organizations struggle with is not about gaining access to technology. Rather, they face the challenges of finding the right technologies to get them good return on investment (ROI). They need to build a robust digital ecosystem across the organization to help develop competitive human capital, build good workspaces, and flatten communication hierarchy. There are different technology integration theories and models to use. Here I’m giving you one example of how to gauge what technologies to use to transform an organization and that is the SAMR model. The SAMR model helps classify technologies based on the levels of impact each technology has on human behaviors. In practice, we can start with what goals we want to accomplish through digital transformation and then use SAMR model to find technologies that align with our goals. The image on the right illustrates the four main constructs of the SAMR model. You can learn more about the SAMR model by watching the video below in which, Dr. Ruben Puentedura, the creator of the SAMR model, talks about what the SAMR model entails and how to use it.

Notably, from S to R, technology integration leads to bigger changes and wider impact across the organization, which parallels with the levels of resistance one will encounter when leading digital transformation. It is obvious that all these four types of technologies can and will help transform an organization but which one to start with or which ones to start with concurrently will depend on many factors. In most cases, an integrated digital transformation strategy is preferred that combines multiple technology initiatives for the purpose of developing a networked digital ecosystem that best enables an organization’s digital agility. Though most literature on SAMR focus on applying the model to classroom teaching, this model has potential to guide organizational digital transformation. Take a look at the following two scenarios and see if you can apply the SAMR model to make sense of their digital transformation practices.

Scenario One
